Yes, it is best to take your pictures horizontally so that they appear as expected within the software. If you have one taken vertically then it will appear stretched.
Please note that the original images are what is actually stored so this is just when viewing the thumbnail images, if you click on the thumbnail image then you can see the orginal image.
Please also note that since the small images are a reduced size, it is impossible to get the same exact clarity as in the orginal images. The small images on the reports are simply to serve as an index. Rest assured that the orginal images taken from your camera are stored and may be exported to provide on CD or to print at 100% photo quality.
The only time I find the photos looking distorted in any way is when I attempt to edit (crop, rotate, adjust size, etc.) in a photo program prior to importing into the report. Fred is aware of this problem and is working on it.

I personally have not had this problem. The software is set up for horizontal format only. Are you trying to use photos taken in vertical format? What size are your photos? If they are to small, you might have this problem, but I don't know how small is to small for this software.
I must be missing something. My pictures look stretched out horizontally when I import them into the software. What am I doing wrong or not doing? Gwenda
