Hi Kim, Yes this can be time consuming and many business owners only document serial numbers if the client has the item already pulled out or if they have the paperwork/warranty registration info that contains the serial numbers available.
You can put a clause in your contract to indicate what you'll be documenting.

I'm having trouble with the serial number issue. Do we need to document the serial number on every item that has one or just the items that are more theft-prone? I have found that almost every electronic item has a serial number. It's very time consuming writing down every serial number on every item, yet if I don't, I don't feel like I'm being very thorough.
Also, if you can't find the serial number or can't get to it do we need to document that in the description or notes area for liability purposes? I don't want someone coming back on me because I couldn't get to the serial number or couldn't find one.
