Yes, Shonda is correct. You typically use lower resolution .jpg or .gif files for websites so that the sizes are not too big and they load fast.
You would use high resolution larger files for printing which can be be .jpg files or .tif . Prints for brochures, business cards etc... come out the best when the graphics files are high resolution at least 300 dpi (dots p/inch). The graphics company that creates your logo should have a brief summary or help section that explains. It is standard procedure when purchasing a logo to get all the needed file formats.
Most places will give you the Logo in servral different formats. They will tell you which format is good for Websites, printing, ect. I use the JPEG one for my website. But you can try all of them and see which one looks better.

I've been shopping for a logo for a while now and have found a few logos that i like but am not sure what type of files are needed for insertion into ads,brochures, and my website. it seems like most logo services offer them in different file formats.
