Before I begin an inventory, I explain what I can do with the software and ask the client what they would like listed and how much information they want in the inventory. This is entirely up to the client to decide. However, I will suggest they include more information on some items.
Usually the expensive items such as beds, TV's, computers and other electronics have the most information listed. I also request a member of the family, or business associate (business inventory) is with me at all times I'm on the premises. This does two things: One, it protects me from being accused of theft if they think something is missing and two, it allows me to ask questions on an item for the inventory.
For items like night stands, dressers, tables and similar items, I usually describe them by material, type wood (if known), color, number of drawers, approximate size and any distinguishing marks or designs that are visible, etc. I will also include any information on an item I'm asked to include unless it is obvious that they are lying.
Can anyone tell me how much detail you need to put on each item? I've generally just been putting the obvious for example a bed i would put the size and the make if it is given or in a spot that I can see without taking all the sheets etc off. But for little things like a night stand lamp etc. What are most people putting. Do you have to ask them how long they've had each item or were they bought each item?
